Grand Final Overview

The Eurovision Song Contest is an internationally televised songwriting competition, organised by the European Broadcasting Union and featuring participants chosen by EBU member broadcasters representing their countries from across Europe and beyond.

Each Participating Broadcaster has until mid-March to choose a song and an artist to perform it. The song and artist can be selected through a televised national selection show (or shows), an internal process, or via any other means they decide.

Participants then compete at the Eurovision Song Contest, traditionally held in May.

The Contest format comprises three live shows: the First Semi-Final (Tuesday evening), the Second Semi-Final (Thursday evening), and the Grand Final (a Saturday night spectacular).

Participating Broadcasters work hard to prepare acts that will qualify from the show’s Semi-Finals, hoping for a ticket to the Saturday night Grand Final where they will join the so-called β€˜Big Five’ broadcasters and Host Broadcaster (usually the broadcaster of the nation than won the previous year).

The β€˜Big Five’ are the Participating Broadcasters from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom - the group of countries who via their broadcasters make the biggest financial contribution towards the organisation of the Contest.

There is a comprehensive set of rules concerning participation that has evolved over the decades, but the main ones relating to competing songs and artists are:

In each show, after all songs have been performed, each country will give two sets of points (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12) to their favourite songs; one set is given by a jury of five music industry professionals from that country, and one set given by viewers watching the show in country. Viewers can vote by telephone, SMS and through the official app.

Out of fairness, you cannot vote for your own country.

In the Semi-Finals, only those countries who took part in that specific show can vote (along with 2 or 3 of the β€˜Big Five’ who are already in the Grand Final), whereas in the Grand Final, all competing countries can vote.

At the end of the Grand Final, the song that has received the most points wins the iconic trophy, and is performed once more.

GRACE POTTER presented by The Current with special guest TBA

GRACE POTTER –MOTHER ROAD

Back in summer 2021, acclaimed singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and rock and rollΒ performerΒ Grace Potter took off on a solo cross-country road trip that would soon bring a life-savingΒ reconnection with her most unbridled self. The Vermont-born artist spent the coming weeks crashing inΒ roadside motels and taking time each night to transcribe the song ideas she’d dreamed up behind the wheel,Β often scrawling those notes onto the backs of postcards and motel notepads. After completing two more tripsΒ on her ownβ€”Potter flew to Nashville for a series of recording sessions that resulted in her mostΒ magnificently unfettered collection of songs to date. Equal parts fearlessly raw memoir and carnivalesqueΒ fable,Β Mother Road is a body of work that goes far beyond the typical album experience.

β€œMother Road is a reframing of my understanding of my history,” she says. β€œIt’s an important and powerful perspective I’d never had until this record, and the heart of it is my journey to self-reliance and a sense of worthiness.” The follow-up to 2019’s Daylightβ€”a release that earned GRAMMY nominations for Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Performanceβ€”Mother Road (released August 18, 2023, via Fantasy Records) fuses elements of soul, blues, country, and timeless rock-and-roll with masterful abandon. Produced by Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Slash, and Weezer) and recorded at RCA’s famed Studio A, the LP is an essential insight into the endless nuances of life and love and belonging. And after thousands of miles on the road, countless nights at seedy motels, and a heartrending return home, Potter has made her way to the kind of creative freedom that leaves both artist and audience indelibly alteredβ€”a freedom that’s undeniably led to her masterpiece.

Of the Orchard

Minneapolis-based pop-rock band Of The Orchard proudly defines themselves as β€œnot, not a boy band.” Marked by a tinge of youthful angst, Of The Orchard pairs a nostalgic sound of 90s and early 2000s rock (Third Eye Blind, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World) with narrative, sentimental lyrics (Dawes, Noah Kahan, Kacey Musgraves). This combination gives listeners thoughtful lyricism supported with upbeat, hook-driven rock. Their songs tell stories familiar to anyone who’s ever endured the transition into adulthood: finding purpose, coming to terms with identities you’ve outgrown, and falling in and out of love.

Their recent EP, Bloom, illuminates the duality of feelings as a relationship begins to bud – the intoxicating, butterfly-filled promise of a future together as well as the throbbing anxiety that comes from giving up control to trust someone with your full heart. The lead single, β€œIf You Wanna Run,” shows the development of the relationship from the very first date up to the point where it’s clear this is exactly what you want and you’ll go anywhere for them. The focal point of the album, β€œLOUD IN MY HEAD,” personifies the nagging, anxious thoughts that arise when you realize you are so overwhelmingly in love with someone that it would break you to lose them. The only way to truly love someone, however, is to give your full trust to them and allow what may come – β€œLOUD IN MY HEAD” is about finding that balance within all the noise of overthinking.

THE JAYHAWKS presented by The Current

The Jayhawks and their rootsy sound were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minnesota music scene in 1985. Over the course of almost 4 decades, 11 albums, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. After releasing two Indie albums in the 80s The Jayhawks signed with American Recordings in 1991 and over the next decade released 5 challenging, at times groundbreaking, albums, toured the world to widespread acclaim and even survived the departure of founding member Mark Olson in 1995. After a hiatus in the mid 2000s, the β€œclassic” 1994 lineup reunited for another new studio album in 2011 and 2 years of solid touring, reacquainting audiences old and new with the band's timeless musical vision. 2014 saw a late 90s version of the band led by Gary Louris hitting the road to support the reissues of the 3 Jayhawks albums released from 1997-2003. This lineup released the band's 9th studio album in 2016, recordedΒ Β in Portland, OR with producers Peter Buck and Tucker Martine. The band's next studio album, Back Roads And Abandoned Motels, was released in the summer of 2018, featuring Jayhawks versions of songs Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus 2 new compositions. Recording for a new Jayhawks album was completed in Minnesota in late 2019 and in July 2020 the band released their 11th studio album, XOXO.
